Salt Lake City drives economic growth, reduces carbon footprint after adopting SQL Server 2008 R2

Today, we are pleased to share that Salt Lake City has adopted an online solution powered by Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 to automate, expedite, and simplify the permit process for developers, architects, and engineers. In addition, they are reducing their carbon dioxide emissions and energy footprint.

Being hit by the recession hard, Salt Lake City was one of the first to respond by streamlining its building permit process.  The first step to “making it easier for customers” was to integrate the separate islands of information maintained by each department involved in the permit approval process into a single shared database. For such a mission-critical function, scalability and reliability were crucial, and the city turned to SQL Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

As a result, the city has reduced the time to gain permit approval by up to 50 percent, shaving days or weeks off the typical schedule and attracting more real estate developers to the city. Additionally, as a result of the online system, Salt Lake City employees and customers will drive an estimated 360,000 fewer miles, print 512,000 fewer pounds of paper, and release 2,300 fewer pounds of hydrocarbons into the air each year.
