How Allrecipes.com personalizes home cooking with Azure

Focus on: Engage Customers, Optimize Operations, Drive Digital Transformation

Most cooks have a cherished resource they turn to for kitchen wisdom, be it a well-worn cookbook, a favorite food blog, or a talented family member. For millions of home cooks, that resource is Allrecipes.com.

Allrecipes.com is the original and largest food-focused social network that helps cooks discover and share the joy of home cooking. It serves 80 million home cooks each year in 24 different countries. Cooks come to Allrecipes.com to discover new recipes, share their favorite culinary creations, and connect with others around food. With a successful app and more than two-thirds of annual visits coming from mobile devices, the company is only beginning to tap into its potential to reach digital audiences.

Creating a dependable, personalized experience for users

Because users’ meal preparation and cooking habits vary throughout the week and according to seasons and holidays, Allrecipes sees significant traffic spikes early in the week and around holidays, and they needed a cloud provider that could support those fluctuations and provide maximum responsiveness. When they found that the site wasn’t performing as well as it could have been, Allrecipes began looking for a cloud partner that would be able to scale to their traffic needs. They settled on Azure, and in the first year of using the Azure environment, their traffic increased by 17% over the previous year.

Simultaneously, they employed Cortana Analytics API to power their recommendations engine, which allows Allrecipes to personalize each user’s experience of the site. The Cortana API takes users’ preferences and cooking patterns into account to make informed recommendations about the recipes and other content they’re likely to enjoy in the future. The more content users share and consume, the more tailored their experience becomes.

Securing a place at the table for a trusted resource

Speed and dependability are critical elements of Allrecipes’ continued growth and popularity with users. Azure’s trusted cloud helps Allrecipes stay fast and dependable to meet the high expectations of the modern marketplace, while the Cortana Analytics API uses machine learning to create a highly personalized experience for every home cook. Allrecipes is preparing for the future by making the most of Microsoft Azure products to ensure that their company transforms along with the needs of their users.
