TotalEnergies reduces costs, expands exploration with Azure Data Manager for Energy

TotalEnergies, a France-based global energy company operating in 120+ countries, relied on operational data spread across fragmented data environments, resulting in slowed decisions, increased risk, and limited secure, repeatable operations at scale.

To remove decision delays and manual friction in its regulated operations, TotalEnergies chose Azure Data Manager for Energy. Built on OSDU standards, it delivers more secure, real‑time data access globally with Azure‑native compliance controls.

TotalEnergies unified data from 10 applications and cut critical operations from days to hours. Teams revised 16 trajectories in hours and onboarded affiliates in weeks instead of months, driving faster decisions and repeatable global operations.

In the high‑stakes world of energy exploration and production, speed, precision, and collaboration are everything. For TotalEnergies, a global integrated energy company with operations in 120-plus countries, the challenge was clear. Its field teams, geoscientists, and business leaders needed fast, reliable, and secure access to operations data for critical decisions—decisions impacting business goals. Yet this data was fragmented across teams, tools, and geographies, slowing decision‑making and increasing operational risk.

“Our teams were spending too much time searching for critical data, exchanging email, and manually transferring files between incompatible systems,” says Sylvain Toinet, Geophysicist and Program Owner at TotalEnergies. “It was unsustainable, increasing the time, risk, and cost of our energy exploration and production.” Toinet determined the company needed a single source of truth to make its dispersed data instantly accessible to anyone, at any time.

Eliminating silos and securing the ecosystem

The answer came in the form of Microsoft Azure Data Manager for Energy, a cloud‑based OSDU data platform service designed to unify infrastructure data while delivering built‑in security and compliance across global operations. The platform provides a scalable, future‑ready foundation that supports operational workloads and TotalEnergies’s evolution as a multi‑energy company.

“The more data we bring into the platform, the more value we can unlock—not just for today’s operations, but for future modeling and decision‑making.”

Emmanuelle Robert, Geophysicist and Data Platform Project Lead, TotalEnergies

Azure Data Manager for Energy aligned closely with TotalEnergies’s vision and the OSDU Forum’s goals: standardize data formats, break down silos, and offer interoperability across the energy ecosystem. The fully managed platform also met TotalEnergies’s stringent internal requirements for data governance, security, and regulatory compliance.

Accelerating decision‑making for business value at scale

“The implementation began with our operational site delivery workflows, where project pace and data volumes are especially intense,” explains Emmanuelle Robert, Geophysicist and Data Platform Project Lead at TotalEnergies. “We needed a way to manage data efficiently from planning to post‑analysis.”

By connecting Azure Data Manager for Energy with 10 internal applications, including Sismage, and third‑party tools like Geolog and Gravitas, TotalEnergies created a unified data environment. Teams can now ingest, validate, and share data in near real time—without manual file transfers or email chains.

The impact was immediate. In one project, 16 trajectories were revised in hours instead of days, while secure web portals replaced physical data shipments to speed collaboration with partners and regulators.

“Using Azure Data Manager for Energy, we’re seeing real ROI in terms of time savings, reduced risk, improved data quality, and accelerated collaboration between drillers and geoscientists.”

Baptiste Joudet, Data Management Project Manager, TotalEnergies

“Using Azure Data Manager for Energy, we’re seeing real ROI in terms of time savings, reduced risk, improved data quality, and accelerated collaboration between drillers and geoscientists," says Baptiste Joudet, Data Management Project Manager at TotalEnergies. “We’ve built ingestion frameworks, automated quality checks, and even integrated AI classifiers to help manage and interpret data more effectively.”

By centralizing data in the cloud, TotalEnergies reduced its reliance on local infrastructure and sped up its energy operations. New affiliates can now be onboarded worldwide in weeks instead of months—without shipping hardware or deploying IT teams on site—improving scalability and operational repeatability.

Finally, using managed HSM encryption keys and granular access controls with Azure Key Vault, the company better protects its sensitive data. “We treat our geoscience and reservoir data as strategic assets,” says Toinet. “Azure gives us the tools to help protect them.”

Building a foundation for tomorrow’s energy models

While currently focusing on operation workflows, TotalEnergies views Azure Data Manager for Energy as a flexible foundation for broader innovation. The company is exploring AI-powered document search, metadata graphing, and automated reporting—all possible through standardized, high‑quality data.

“We’re just getting started,” says Robert. “The more data we bring into the platform, the more value we can unlock—not just for today’s operations, but for future modeling and decision‑making.”

With Azure Data Manager for Energy, TotalEnergies now moves with greater speed and certainty, backed by a trusted, highly secure data platform that supports its work today and the innovations it is building for tomorrow.
