{"id":235479,"date":"2015-12-03T15:00:35","date_gmt":"2015-12-03T15:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.technet.microsoft.com\/inside_microsoft_research\/2015\/12\/03\/deng-receives-prestigious-ieee-technical-achievement-award\/"},"modified":"2017-02-07T16:22:33","modified_gmt":"2017-02-08T00:22:33","slug":"deng-receives-prestigious-ieee-technical-achievement-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/blog\/deng-receives-prestigious-ieee-technical-achievement-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Deng receives prestigious IEEE Technical Achievement Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"posted-by\"><em>By <span class=\"author\">George Thomas Jr., Writer, Microsoft<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/people\/deng\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin-top: 8px; margin-bottom: 8px;\" title=\"Li Deng - IEEE SPS Technical Achievement Award\" src=\"https:\/\/msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net\/media\/TNBlogsFS\/prod.evol.blogs.technet.com\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/00\/00\/00\/90\/35\/li-deng-ieee-sps-technical-achievement-award.png\" alt=\"Li Deng - IEEE SPS Technical Achievement Award\" \/><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Adding to an already lengthy list of accolades, <a title=\"Li Deng\" href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/people\/deng\/\" target=\"_blank\">Li Deng<\/a>, partner research manager in Microsoft&#8217;s Redmond, Wash. lab, has received the <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"2015 IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award\" href=\"http:\/\/www.signalprocessingsociety.org\/awards-fellows\/award-recipient\/\" target=\"_blank\">2015 IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> for outstanding contributions to deep learning and to automatic speech recognition.<\/p>\n<p>The award honors a person, who over a period of years, has made outstanding technical contributions to theory and\/or practice in the technical areas within the scope of society, as demonstrated by publications, patents, or recognized impact on the field.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am honored and humbled to receive this award from my IEEE organization,&#8221; Deng says.<\/p>\n<p>But, he adds, he had a lot of help.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many collaborators, in Microsoft as well as at universities, have been working closely with me on developing deep learning technology and applying it to a range of applications including notably automatic speech recognition, language processing, and business data analytics,&#8221; Deng says. &#8220;They share this honor by the amazing teamwork exhibited for many years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2013 Deng received the IEEE SPS Best Paper Award for <em><a title=\"Context-Dependent Pre-trained Deep Neural Networks for Large Vocabulary Speech Recognition\" href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/publication\/context-dependent-pre-trained-deep-neural-networks-for-large-vocabulary-speech-recognition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Context-Dependent Pre-trained Deep Neural Networks for Large Vocabulary Speech Recognition<\/a><\/em>, along with colleagues George Dahl, Dong Yu and Alex Acero.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The idea of using deep neural nets for speech recognition was pioneered by Li Deng and his collaborators back in 2009,&#8221; notes <a title=\"Peter Lee\" href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/people\/petelee\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Lee<\/a>, corporate vice president, Microsoft Research. &#8220;At that time, almost no one thought that this would be a good idea &#8212; in fact, I personally thought it was nuts!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But within 18 months it became clear that this would be a transformational advance, not only in speech recognition but in a wide range of classification and perception problems. Li can truly be called a pioneer in the field,&#8221; Lee says.<\/p>\n<p>Deng joined Microsoft Research in 1999 and his recent research has focused on deep learning and <a title=\"machine intelligence\" href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/research-area\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\">machine intelligence<\/a> applied to big text data and speech processing, <a title=\"speech-to-speech translation\" href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/project\/milestones-path-skype-translator\/\" target=\"_blank\">speech-to-speech translation<\/a>, <a title=\"information retrieval\" href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/research-area\/search-information-retrieval\/\" target=\"_blank\">information retrieval<\/a> and <a title=\"data mining\" href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/research-area\/data-visualization-analytics-platform\/\" target=\"_blank\">data mining<\/a>. The breadth of his research is far reaching and extends into numerous areas of <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"multimodal human-computer interactions\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multimodal_interaction\" target=\"_blank\">multimodal human-computer interactions<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He has published more than 300 referred papers in leading journals and conferences and authored or co-authored five books in the areas of speech technology, machine learning, and other areas of computer science, including <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Deep Learning: Methods and Applications\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nowpublishers.com\/articles\/foundations-and-trends-in-signal-processing\/SIG-039\" target=\"_blank\">Deep Learning: Methods and Applications<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> and <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Automatic Speech Recognition: A Deep Learning Approach\" href=\"http:\/\/www.springer.com\/us\/book\/9781447157786\" target=\"_blank\">Automatic Speech Recognition: A Deep Learning Approach<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The IEEE SPS is the largest technical community for research in machine learning for signal processing, speech recognition, image processing, language understanding, and other areas of information processing.
