Hospital information systems have primarily been\u00a0designed to support physicians and administrators,\u00a0though recent research has explored the value of\u00a0patient-facing information displays. Electronic systems\u00a0can be designed to provide tailored information\u00a0to patients on their health, their care teams, the status\u00a0of their hospital stays, and their expected care\u00a0plans. However, this direct delivery of information\u00a0from database to patient represents a fundamental\u00a0change to the traditional flow of clinical information.\u00a0We therefore explore physician attitudes toward a\u00a0proposed patient-facing display of information abstracted\u00a0from a hospital EHR, in the context of an\u00a0urban emergency department. We find that physicians\u00a0generally support direct delivery of electronic\u00a0information to patients, and uncover important concerns\u00a0to consider in the design of patient-facing information\u00a0systems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
