AI as a Living Medium<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Throughout history, new media have expanded what people can express, create, and understand. Writing enabled the externalization of thought, drawing enabled visual reasoning, and programming enabled the creation of computational processes. AI introduces a new possibility: a medium that is generative, malleable, and alive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A living medium is more than a passive surface awaiting instruction. It can generate possibilities, transform artifacts, reveal connections, and evolve alongside its users. People engage with it not only through language, but also through creating, editing, arranging, demonstrating, and exploring ideas in many forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as conversational AI expanded people’s ability to access and direct intelligence through language, AI as a living medium expands people’s ability <\/strong>to think, create, and discover through direct engagement with evolving computational artifacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this vision, AI becomes a medium for thought and creation. Users and AI contribute within a shared space where ideas can be expressed, explored, and refined as they emerge. The interaction shifts from obtaining answers to discovering possibilities, from directing work to shaping it, and from consuming outputs to actively creating with a living computational material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As writing amplified memory, drawing amplified visual reasoning, and programming amplified computation, AI as a living medium may amplify human cognition, creativity, and problem solving<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

For centuries, new media have expanded human capabilities. Writing extended memory, drawing extended visual reasoning, and programming extended our ability to create computational processes. We explore a similar possibility for AI: not simply as a conversational partner, but as a living medium for thought, creation, and discovery.
