But, if\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we want\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AI\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to really benefit people, we need to find a way to get them to trust it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, because people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">won\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0use technology they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on\u2019t trust<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">espite<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0growing advances in AI tech, people still deeply lack confidence in its predictions. Given the option to trust a human over a machine,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pega.com\/about\/news\/press-releases\/consumers-failing-embrace-ai-benefits-says-research\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">they\u2019ll trust a human time and time again<\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, even if\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/repository.upenn.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1392&context=fnce_papers\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the human is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0clearly wrong<\/span><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">part because AI is often working behind the scenes,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">so\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">many people simply aren\u2019t tuned into the times it works. At any one of these stages it is possible to either retain or lose users due to a breach of trust: 1. Before use, 2. First moments, 3. Repeat use<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">imilarly, there<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">opportunities to \u2018do it right\u2019 at each stage:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before use, set positive and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">accurate expectations.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">People evaluate experiences relative to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">what they anticipate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Expectations can be positive or negative; accurate or not. If expectations are too low, people won\u2019t engage. If expectations are too high, people will<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0quickly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0feel disappointed and lose trust.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">first moments<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">experience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">set a high bar for value and relevance.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">irst moments are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">critical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for building trust. If the experience isn\u2019t immediately seen as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">valuable, people won\u2019t use it. If a trust breach occurs early,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">curiosity and trust drop<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0off fast, and people are very unlikely to use the experience again.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Start where your AI is more likely to be right<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Algorithms aren\u2019t perfect, and there are places where mistakes are more critical than others.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While the AI is learning, it will make mistakes, perhaps doing things the user doesn\u2019t expect. So don\u2019t try to program high value tasks at this stage.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ere\u2019s some trust establish<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">take risks when the user\u2019s relationship with it is farther along.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233279\":true,\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"5\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW247999027 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247999027 BCX8\">Reward repeat usage by making the experience more personal over time.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW247999027 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247999027 BCX8\">The simple act of using something makes it feel more familiar, and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2 SCXW247999027 BCX8\">breeds<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW247999027 BCX8\">\u00a0trust. Once you get people engaging beyond the first moments, the next step is to keep them investing.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW247999027 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233279\":true,\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What\u2019s\u00a0next<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019re making an ambitious\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">promise with AI. We want it to be personal, contextual,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anticipatory, self-adapting, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">compelling. We want to strike<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the right balance between using data\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0create<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0intelligent, personal experiences\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">while maintaining customers\u2019 security and privacy.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At Microsoft, we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have a centralized approach to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">responsible AI, led by Microsoft\u2019s AI, Ethics, and Effects in Engineering and Research (AETHER) Committee and its working groups, along with our Office of Responsible AI (ORA).
