KITE: a Kinesthetic Interface for Tangible Exploration
- Elizabeth Childs; Sumit Basu, Microsoft; Scott Saponas, Microsoft
KITE, a Kinesthetic Interface for Tangible Exploration, is a tangible haptic robot that lets learners physically feel forces and interactions represented in digital simulations. By combining free-form tangible interaction with responsive, multidirectional force and torque feedback, KITE enables abstract physical phenomena to become embodied experiences, opening new possibilities for hands-on learning across physics domains. The robot moves freely like a mouse until it encounters a virtual object or force, at which point gearless motors and custom motor control produce forces aligned with on-screen graphics. A hybrid localization approach combines overhead visual tracking with motor feedback to provide precise, responsive force rendering between camera updates. These capabilities support experiences ranging from feeling lift on an airfoil and pulling apart molecular bonds to exploring tidal forces, spring mechanics, electric fields, and different forms of friction.
