{"id":109142,"date":"2016-10-17T04:03:53","date_gmt":"2016-10-17T11:03:53","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2025-06-11T08:17:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T15:17:10","slug":"how-to-create-and-customize-applications-with-powerapps-with-laura-onu-webinar-oct-20th-10am-pst","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/power-apps\/how-to-create-and-customize-applications-with-powerapps-with-laura-onu-webinar-oct-20th-10am-pst\/","title":{"rendered":"How to create and customize applications with PowerApps with Laura Onu Webinar  Oct 20th 10AM PST"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week we are with the PowerApps team and joining us is Laura Onu, PowerApps Program Mananger , and she will be walking us through how to create and customize applications with PowerApps.<\/p>\n<p>In the last couple of Webinars there have been a couple requests to show how to do Power BI integration with PowerApps\u2026Specifically inputting data into the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/powerbi.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/real-time-in-no-time-with-power-bi\/\">real time tiles.<\/a> so i will show this as one of the examples.<\/p>\n<p>When: 10\/20\/2016 10:00AM PST<\/p>\n<p>Where:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/info.microsoft.com\/US-PowerBI-WBNR-FY17-10Oct-20-Creating-and-Customizing-your-Application-with-PowerApps-265168_Registration.html\" title=\"https:\/\/info.microsoft.com\/US-PowerBI-WBNR-FY17-10Oct-20-Creating-and-Customizing-your-Application-with-PowerApps-265168_Registration.html&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;br \/&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;\">https:\/\/info.microsoft.com\/US-PowerBI-WBNR-FY17-10Oct-20-Creating-and-Customizing-your-Application-with-PowerApps-265168_Registration.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you aren\u2019t able to make the webinar here are the steps for getting Power Apps \/Power BI integration working with Microsoft Flow.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2>First part is to Create an API based streaming data set in Power BI and connect.<\/h2>\n<p>1. <strong>Add a new dashboard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is done by logging to Powerbi.com and pressing the \u201c+\u201d sign for creating a new Dashboard<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb518.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"611\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb518.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"669\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Add a new streaming dataset.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This can either be done from the streaming data set &gt; New streaming data set or from the dashboard select \u201cAdd tile\u201d &gt; Custom Streaming data and select \u201cAdd streaming Dataset\u201d (see image below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb582.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"581\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb582.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"722\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb583.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"584\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb583.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"725\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Add a new API based streaming dataset<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb520.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb520.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"744\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>5. Define the streaming Dataset you want to use.\u00a0 In this case i have added the following values with the following types:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Id<\/strong> = String<\/p>\n<p><strong>QTY<\/strong> = Number<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amount<\/strong> = Number<\/p>\n<p><strong>Date<\/strong> = Date<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb521.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"325\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb521.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"356\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Note the JSON is being defined in real time for you \u2013 very cool!<\/p>\n<p>6. Copy the End point to Push URL for this JSON.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb522.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"607\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb522.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"664\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>7.\u00a0 Add a real time tile to display the data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the dashboard\u00a0 in the upper right hand corner select \u201c+ Add Tile\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb580.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"547\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb580.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"680\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>Add a Card Tile type<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb584.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"558\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb584.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"693\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Second part of this sample is:<\/p>\n<h2>Create the Flow that will Push the JSON to the Power BI URL<\/h2>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Log into <a href=\"https:\/\/flow.microsoft.com\/\">https:\/\/flow.microsoft.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb523.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb523.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"541\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 Create a new Flow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Navigate to <strong>\u201cMy Flows\u201d<\/strong> and create a new file by selecting \u201cCreate from Blank\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb524.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"507\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb524.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"556\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Decide how you will invoke your flow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this case we want to PowerApps invoke the flow so select the PowerApps option from the drop down<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb525.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb525.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"589\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Add the Action(s) for the Flow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this example we should only need to add the http action.\u00a0 Unfortunately there is an issue in the current builds of PowerApps binding to a Flow which accepts an HTTP Body.\u00a0 To work around this, create a Flow with the first action is to send an email (Good debugging tip)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb585.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"489\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb585.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"607\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Add the mail send action <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first action needed is to send email with the body being supplied by PowerApps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb586.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb586.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"708\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 Add the HTTP Action<\/p>\n<p>From Step 6 copy the URL Power BI supplied for pushing in the JSON.\u00a0 For the HTTP body select the email body supplied at the bottom of the HTTP action card.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb587.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"888\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb587.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"726\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Third part of the sample is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create the Power Apps Application to supply the JSON values. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 <strong>Log into PowerApps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Navigate to <a href=\"https:\/\/powerapps.microsoft.com\/\" title=\"https:\/\/powerapps.microsoft.com\">https:\/\/powerapps.microsoft.com<\/a> and select Login \u2013with the same account you used to create the Flow above.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb588.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"897\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb588.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"732\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>2.<strong> Create a new PowerApps Application<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After you log into PowerApps you you can choose to get started with a\u00a0 sample App or start with a brand new application.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb589.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"573\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb589.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"628\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 <strong>Open the PowerApps Windows Authoring Application.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After selecting New app, you are offered a choice of using the web authoring experience or PowerApps Studio for Windows.<\/p>\n<p>For this sample select: \u201cPowerApps Studio for Windows\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb590.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb590.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"688\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4 .\u00a0 <strong>Create a new PowerApps application<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using the blank app template select the Phone layout.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb591.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb591.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"678\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Insert a Textinput and a Button.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are going to use the Textbox to hold the JSON and the Button to invoke the Flow.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb592.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb592.png\" title=\"image\" width=\"641\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 <strong>Change the Textinput to accept multiline values.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the real world you would build the JSON with a couple of Input boxes using string concatenation but for a sample we will just put the entire JSON into a single input box.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb594.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb594.png\" style=\"border-color: currentcolor;\" title=\"image\" Assign the flow to the Button.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After selecting the button select \u201cAction\u201d &gt; \u201cFlows\u201d and you will see all the flows that have been created to be activated by PowerApps.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb596.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"605\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb596.png\" style=\"border-color: currentcolor;\" title=\"image\" width=\"718\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0 <strong>Run the PowerApps Application<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the image below, run the PowerApps application by pressing the \u201cRun\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb598.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"302\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb598.png\" style=\"border-color: currentcolor;\" title=\"image\" width=\"757\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Verify the entire process is working.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pressing the button you should immediately get a piece of email with the JSON being sent to Power BI and the real time tile being updated.<\/p>\n<p>If you are getting the Mail but the tile isn\u2019t being updated verify you copied the JSON into notepad before pasting it into the PowerApps InputBox1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb597.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" border=\"0\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/power-platform\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/image_thumb597.png\"
