\"IllustratedWhile AI is driving value in all aspects of our lives, there are times where it\u2019s hard to <\/span><\/span><\/span>separate  the<\/span><\/span><\/span> aspirations of those who want to use it to do good from <\/span><\/span><\/span>those leverag<\/span><\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span><\/span> AI <\/span><\/span><\/span>today <\/span><\/span><\/span>to positively impact real change in health and medici<\/span><\/span><\/span>ne.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I have the privilege of working with many talented leaders and organizations that are truly making health and medical services better by harnessing the power of healthcare\u2019s data tsunami <\/span>using<\/span> AI and other analytical solutions.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

COVID<\/span>-19<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>p<\/span>art <\/span>t<\/span>wo<\/span> <\/span><\/h3>\n

There is growing optimism in how we manage COVID<\/span>-19<\/span> going forward to restore many of the daily living activities we miss and treasure. One of the good things we learned from COVID<\/span>-19<\/span> is that, when faced with a challenge, health systems are capable of agile transformation. As part of this, we also demonstrated that<\/span> AI<\/span> <\/span>could<\/span> drive a \u201cshort time to value.\u201d <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Today vaccine distribution is a top priority. <\/span>Health professionals are challenged with ensuring the efficient distribution of vaccines, specifically among vulnerable populations. <\/span>Microsoft partner <\/span>J<\/span>vion<\/span> <\/span>recently unveiled its <\/span>COVID Vaccination Prioritization Index<\/span><\/a> to guide the distribution of vaccines to communities whose social determinants of health make them more vulnerable. This tool is publicly available and uses <\/span>AI<\/span> to help with delivering vaccines to patient populations most at risk.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Adaptive Biotechnologies<\/span> is<\/span> another Microsoft partner <\/span>that\u2019s <\/span>making a very big <\/span>impact <\/span>o<\/span>n health and medicine<\/span>. The company is<\/span> using genomic data and AI to decode the adaptive immune system and create an <\/span>i<\/span>mmune <\/span>m<\/span>edicine <\/span>p<\/span>latform.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Imagine a simple blood test that could provide accurate and early diagnosis of thousands of different diseases simultaneously<\/span> \u2014 that\u2019s <\/span>the premise of the groundbreaking work underway.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Adaptive Biotechnologies<\/span> has recently created the <\/span>T-Detect COVID test<\/span><\/a>, which can<\/span> detect <\/span>an immune response to the virus that causes <\/span>the <\/span>COVID<\/span>–<\/span>19 disease. This new test demonstrates the power of combining <\/span>the company\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>i<\/span>mmune medicine <\/span>p<\/span>latform with Microsoft\u2019s AI and machine learning <\/span>(ML) <\/span>capabilities.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond COVID, we are returning our focus to the many health challenges that have taken a back seat to the pandemic headlines.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Building intelligence into medical images is one of the most promising areas for AI in health today.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Project <\/span><\/a>InnerEye<\/span><\/a> is a research initiative underway by the <\/span>Health Intelligence<\/span><\/a>\u202fteam at\u202f<\/span>Microsoft Research Cambridge (UK)<\/span><\/a>\u202fthat is exploring ways in which ML can assist clinicians in planning their radi<\/span>ation treatments for cancer so that they can spend more time with their patients. In September 2020, we released\u202f<\/span>the <\/span>InnerEye<\/span><\/a> open-source deep-learning toolkit<\/span><\/a>. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Ambient <\/span>intelligence<\/span> is also getting a lot of attention<\/span> and <\/span>is being used to <\/span>reduce many of the important but repetitive administrative activities <\/span>physicians face. <\/span>Nuance Communications Inc. is <\/span>another Microsoft partner that is <\/span>delivering <\/span>ambient clinical intelligence (ACI)<\/span><\/a>\u202ftechnology\u202f<\/span>more routinely <\/span>into exam rooms<\/span>. ACI enables<\/span> ambient<\/span> sensing and conversational AI to take care of some of the more burdensome administrative tasks and to provide clinical documentation <\/span>that writes itself. This allow<\/span>s doctors to turn their attention fully to taking care of patients.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Looking ahead, I\u2019m excited about this month\u2019s <\/span>launch of our<\/span> new hardware and software platform called <\/span>Microsoft Azure Percept<\/span><\/a>. It\u2019s an entire platform that aims to simplify the ways customers can enable AI capabilities at the edge. It seamlessly integrates with other Azure services, including Azure Machine Learning, Azure Live Video Analytics<\/span>,<\/span> and Azure Cognitive Services<\/span>,<\/span> to help provide detailed insight<\/span>. The platform also provides<\/span> detailed<\/span> vision and audio insights in real<\/span> <\/span>time.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
