represent and the influence we have on business, economics, and politics.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Finance is a natural place for that community to gain&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prominence,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;we&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rely on our abilities to frame issues and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">move&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">toward&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">solutions.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">takes a very deliberate approach to culture<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">finance&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has been&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the forefront of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">critical&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">inclusion and diversity efforts<\/span><span Hispanic and Latinx Finance Professionals<\/span><\/b><\/a><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, on Thursday, January 28, 2021<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We want to make space<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and share different&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stories<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from both<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;Microsoft and the industry in general.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are excited to be hosting this event in partnership with the Association of Latino Professionals&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for America (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alpfa.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ALPFA<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), whose purpose is to connect Latino leaders for impact.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My personal goal is to amplify<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;our voices, give them context, and share what Hispanic and Latinx finance leaders are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;up to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m honored to be giving the keynote address to share&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">what Microsoft&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is doing from a finance perspective.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019ve been on this modern finance journey for the last 25 years,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">letting our CFO customers&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">know the different challenges and decisions we\u2019ve made to get the Microsoft finance function where it is today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Finding the courage to bet on yourself<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019ve seen much of that journey&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during my time at Microsoft, which is only the second company I\u2019ve worked for.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I started as the controller for the Microsoft Peru subsidiary in 1996,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which had less than $15 million in revenue and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fewer than 10 employees. It\u2019s been a long road<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;from there to where I\u2019m sitting now, looking after the Americas commercial business, which includes Latin America and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;original Microsoft Peru<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;office<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;that is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;now part of a conglomerate of subsidiaries.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some stretches of that road were less traveled, as the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y say<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where I took<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;jobs that may not have made sense in the moment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I went to Microsoft Australia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;for several years<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and that turned out to be an important&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">decision<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I developed this sense of loneliness because of the time difference,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with only four hours overlapping with the rest of the world<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, so<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;I learned to make decisions on my own very early.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Then&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I worked in the Middle East and Africa, based in Istanbul, for about five years.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although it was not apparent from the beginning, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hat was one of the happiest assignments for my family and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">me<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;our first&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">experience&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in a Muslim African country. I learned a lot about myself and humanity in gener<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">al<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014there are so many more things that bind us together than separate us.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A friend of mine told me years ago that you have to be willing to bet on yourself. I think that\u2019s the ultimate definition of courage: making a call when the outcomes are uncertain<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f the outcomes are given, there\u2019s no risk and no reward.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s about having the fortitude, clarity, and presence of mind when those moments come, to recognize them and make the call that works best for you.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Inspiring the community to dream and achieve more<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;share my own story not&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to be pretentious but&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">because&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I want people to see what\u2019s possible.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I have been&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/gift-role-models-victor-casalino\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">empowered<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;by mentors<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;who came before me, like<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Roberto\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Goizueta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;at Coca-Cola and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Orlando Ayala at Microsoft<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">now that I\u2019m in t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">his chair, I take that responsibility and carry it forward.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our goal&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/info.microsoft.com\/en-us-landing-EmpoweringHispanicandLatinxinFinanceVirtualCommunityEvent-none.html?wt.mc_id=AID3026860_QSG_SCL_501068\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Empowering Hispanic and Latinx Finance Professionals<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;event<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;is to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">inspire people&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from this community&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to dream and achieve more.
