Resiliency is a significant challenge for\u00a0<\/span>finance organizations<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>during\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0current COVID-19 pandemic<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>financial service providers need the right mix of security, compliance and agility to stay flexible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A previous article from Lisa Choi and Luke Thomas<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>outlines the importance of\u00a0the cloud\u00a0in building elastic infrastructures.\u00a0<\/span>To follow up on that topic,\u00a0<\/span>I recently spoke with Michelle Unger,\u00a0<\/span>EY\u00a0<\/span>Global Technology Officer,\u00a0<\/span>who outlined\u00a0<\/span>her organization\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>experience enacting\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>cloud\u00a0<\/span>transformation\u00a0<\/span>at EY\u00a0<\/span>and how it impacted their operations and their\u00a0<\/span>ability to\u00a0<\/span>drive transformation for their<\/span>\u00a0clients.\u00a0<\/span>EY is one of the largest<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>professional services\u00a0<\/span>organizations<\/span>\u00a0in the world, providing\u00a0<\/span>assurance, tax, strategy\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>transactions<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and consulting services\u00a0<\/span>to companies\u00a0<\/span>globally<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0<\/span><\/b>was<\/span><\/b>\u00a0the initial thinking behind\u00a0<\/span><\/b>the\u00a0<\/span><\/b>digital transformation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0at\u00a0EY<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MU:\u00a0<\/span>We\u00a0<\/span>tried to accomplish three goals<\/span>: get our data into a secure cloud,\u00a0<\/span>get the tools we needed to build cloud<\/span>\u00a0offerings\u00a0<\/span>for our clients and to transition to a managed\u00a0services\u00a0model in the cloud.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Today<\/span>, we have<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>global technology and data platform underpinned by\u00a0<\/span>public\u00a0<\/span>cloud to\u00a0<\/span>provide<\/span>\u00a0technology at speed\u00a0<\/span>and innovation at scale\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>EY<\/span>\u00a0clients<\/span>. About\u00a0<\/span>80% of our business<\/span>–<\/span>critical\u00a0<\/span>products and application<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0running on almost 40,000 cloud workloads,\u00a0<\/span>contributing to billions of dollars of cross-service line revenue across 160 countries<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our<\/span>\u00a0initial\u00a0<\/span>drivers focused<\/span>\u00a0on business agility and\u00a0<\/span>how to better leverage<\/span>\u00a0managed\u00a0<\/span>services<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>approach\u00a0positioned\u00a0<\/span>us to transform our\u00a0<\/span>internal processes<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0while shifting our\u00a0<\/span>offerings<\/span>\u00a0completely to the cloud<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>This position<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0us\u00a0<\/span>better<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0serve our customers<\/span>, many of\u00a0<\/span>whom<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>were ready to make their own cloud transformations to\u00a0<\/span>maintain\u00a0<\/span>competitive<\/span>ness<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People are a company\u2019s most important assets, whether\u00a0<\/span><\/b>its<\/span><\/b>\u00a0employees or clients they have relationships with. Can you talk about\u00a0<\/span><\/b>how\u00a0<\/span><\/b>EY brought its people along the transformation journey?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MU:\u00a0<\/span>We\u2019ve always put people first in EY, so we\u2019ve focused on\u00a0<\/span>creating a learning culture that\u2019s accessible to everyone.\u00a0<\/span>This helps our teams stay skilled\u00a0on\u00a0all our products while maintaining resiliency against skill\u00a0<\/span>silos across the company.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve prioritized certification, and we\u2019ve leveraged platforms\u00a0<\/span>such as<\/span>\u00a0Microsoft Learn and the Cloud Skills Challenge to incentivize learning up and down the organization.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We also\u00a0<\/span>launched\u00a0<\/span>our own<\/span>\u00a0EY Tech\u00a0<\/span>MBA\u00a0<\/span>program\u00a0<\/span>to ensure that\u00a0<\/span>EY<\/span>\u00a0people can stay on top of technology and articulate its value to\u00a0<\/span>EY<\/span>\u00a0clients.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These investments in people have directly enabled our ability to build products and accelerators for\u00a0 clients, such as\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>EY<\/span>\u00a0Cloud Governance\u00a0<\/span>offering,\u00a0<\/span>which provides real-time risk monitoring and report visualizations to abstract and aggregate cloud control data across multiple platforms.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s talk about the results you’ve\u00a0<\/span><\/b>seen\u00a0<\/span><\/b>from\u00a0<\/span><\/b>the investments you’ve made and let’s use the current COVID<\/span><\/b>-19<\/span><\/b>\u00a0crisis as the backdrop for those results. How has the work you’ve done enabled your business and enhanced the overall\u00a0<\/span><\/b>employees’<\/span><\/b>\u00a0experience?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MU:\u00a0<\/span>First, we\u00a0<\/span>were able to\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>ransition over 280,000 EY\u00a0<\/span>professionals<\/span>\u00a0to remote working<\/span>\u00a0almost instantaneously<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>70% increase from pre-COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span>We<\/span>\u00a0helped enable<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>access for\u00a0<\/span>over\u00a0<\/span>4,00<\/span>0<\/span>\u00a0clients\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>Microsoft\u00a0<\/span>Teams and our business applications to actively collaborate in\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>new<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>digital way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From a client\u00a0<\/span>standpoint<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>we were\u00a0<\/span>well<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>positioned<\/span>\u00a0to respond quickly\u00a0<\/span>and early<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0our COVID-19 response<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In a matter of days, we were able to launch the EY CARES PPP Forgiveness (Pay<\/span>check<\/span>\u00a0Protection Program) platform<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0which was instrumental in helping several clients support the forgiveness process for PPP loans, a new concept to SBA lending<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, we<\/span>\u00a0were also able to very quickly<\/span>\u00a0launc<\/span>h<\/span>\u00a0our\u00a0<\/span>COVID<\/span>-19 Enterprise Resilience Tool<\/a><\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>helps\u00a0<\/span>enable firms to\u00a0<\/span>evaluate their risks and levels of preparedness to deal with the pandemic<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The tool\u00a0<\/span>helps businesses identify<\/span>\u00a0where to adapt their operations to increase resilience and begin to consider how to reframe their future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What have you learned in this journey, and what do you think could be applied to the\u00a0<\/span><\/b>f<\/span><\/b>inancial\u00a0<\/span><\/b>s<\/span><\/b>ervices\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Industry?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MU:\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>e made\u00a0<\/span>several\u00a0<\/span>mistakes and learned a lot of lessons.\u00a0<\/span>Early on, w<\/span>e built a\u00a0<\/span>complex ecosystem<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>so<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>we\u00a0<\/span>didn\u2019t get the agility we wanted.\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>built a fortress around a cloud environment.\u00a0<\/span>We learned you can\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>redeploy your old infrastructure without taking away from what you\u2019re trying to do with the\u00a0cloud.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It forced us to<\/span>\u00a0break down organizational silos and<\/span>\u00a0think more about agile DevOps\u00a0<\/span>and reskilling as resiliency measures<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0while still adhering to security and compliance needs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There isn\u2019t a one-size-fits-all solution for business resiliency, but\u00a0<\/span>it can be achieved even in highly regulated industries<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Through her experience with\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>transformation<\/span>\u00a0at EY<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Michelle\u00a0<\/span>Unger showed that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the cloud plays a significant role in providing resiliency and\u00a0<\/span>COVID<\/span>-19<\/span>\u00a0put all their lessons learned\u00a0<\/span>in this area\u00a0<\/span>to the test<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>speed with which EY\u00a0<\/span>was<\/span>\u00a0able to move to\u00a0working\u00a0remotely<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0as well as how they were able to transform their lessons learned into tools to benefit their clients<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0is a great example of the agility they have gained with the cloud<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
