As I work with customers across the US, <\/span>I<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>hear\u00a0<\/span>that many\u00a0<\/span>find the<\/span>\u00a0\u201cpromise of AI\u201d\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0be<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>somewhat<\/span>\u00a0overwhelming<\/span>, with a variety of questions about where to start.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In reality, the majority of SaaS offerings that we<\/span>\u00a0offer at Microsoft already include some AI capabilities, and the Azure\u00a0<\/span>platfo<\/span>r<\/span>m<\/span>\u00a0has a wide variety of options available\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0analyze images, comprehend speech, interact with data in natural ways<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and make predictions using data<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>AI is absolutely the future of the technology industry for many reasons, and it is estimated that this technology will deliver more than $18 trillion dollars to our economy over the next decade.\u00a0<\/span>As<\/span>\u00a0we all strive to work more efficiently and make better data-driven decisions, why is AI so essential and\u00a0<\/span>how can enterprises truly begin to\u00a0<\/span>take advantage of\u00a0<\/span>its<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>promise now<\/span>?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To get started, we must understand that there are various types of AI, and\u00a0<\/span>varying<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>levels<\/span>\u00a0of complexity, risk, and capability offered with each. This is\u00a0similar to\u00a0the cloud adoption conversations we were all having a decade ago on the differences in SaaS (simple) versus IaaS (lift\/shift) and PaaS (fully customizable). Understanding where to start with AI is critical so that we can set expectations accordingly and understand our risks and complexity levels.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding AI\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

As we approach this increasingly broad topic, there are two primary types of AI which are helpful to understand:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Artificial Narrow Intelligence\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and<\/span>\u00a0Artificial General Intelligence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Artificial Narrow Intelligence<\/span>\u00a0(or Narrow AI) refers\u202fto instances in which a technology outperforms humans in very narrowly defined tasks. This includes the personal assistants that we all use each<\/span>\u00a0day, including\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>hatbots on\u00a0<\/span>web<\/span>sites, language translation systems,\u00a0<\/span>directional mapping applications,\u00a0<\/span>and even autonomous cars and cargo ships<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0Narrow AI\u202fis the\u202fhighest\u202flevel of AI\u202fdevelopment\u202fthat\u202fhas\u202fbeen reached so far, and every example of AI that we leverage in the real world is categorized technically as a form of narrow Artificial Intelligence.<\/span>\u00a0A prime example\u00a0<\/span>is the\u00a0<\/span>US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<\/span>CDC<\/span>) COVID-19 assessment<\/span>\u00a0chatbot<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>With the right tools, i<\/span>t\u2019s relatively easy for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>agencies to\u00a0<\/span>quickly stand\u00a0<\/span>up a\u00a0<\/span>bot<\/span>\u00a0like this<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and really improve efficiencies for<\/span>\u00a0helpdesks and end-users alike<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span>rtificial\u202fGeneral Intelligence<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(or Strong AI)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0on the other hand,<\/span>\u00a0is a type of distinguished\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>I<\/span>\u00a0that simulates the breadth of the human intellect, rather than focusing on more specific or narrower tasks.\u00a0<\/span>While we can accomplish\u00a0<\/span>massive\u00a0<\/span>business improvements<\/span>\u00a0with ANI today, we are still a long way from<\/span>\u00a0being able to\u00a0<\/span>leverage\u00a0<\/span>computing<\/span>\u00a0intelligence with the capacity to understand or learn any intellectual task\u00a0<\/span>in the same way\u00a0<\/span>that a human being can<\/span>.\u00a0 There is\u00a0<\/span>certainly\u00a0<\/span>a lot of investment in this area though, and\u00a0<\/span>Microsoft Research has\u00a0<\/span>even\u00a0<\/span>developed a suite of tasks that teach artificial agents how to seek information actively, by asking questions<\/span>\u00a0instead of simply leveraging known data<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Such behavior is a vital research step towards Artificial General Intelligence and\u00a0<\/span>delivering on this potential is\u00a0<\/span>also a reason why Microsoft has\u00a0<\/span>invested over $1 billion in OpenAI<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Relentless focus\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
