{"id":31815,"date":"2019-04-11T12:09:42","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T19:09:42","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2019-10-16T02:22:50","modified_gmt":"2019-10-16T02:22:50","slug":"they-are-us-embracing-diversity-inclusivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/industry\/microsoft-in-business\/future-of-work\/2019\/04\/11\/they-are-us-embracing-diversity-inclusivity\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThey\u201d Are Us: Embracing Diversity &#038; Inclusivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video Player\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/videoplayer\/embed\/RE2Sxh5\" class=\"c-video\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When we talk about Diversity and Inclusion as a core business pillar it\u2019s all too easy to lose track of the human element of it.<\/p>\n<p>After all, we typically talk about the \u201cwork\u201d in terms of metrics or programs. For example, \u201cSenior Female Mentoring Program\u201d or \u201c10% Hispanic\/Latinx workforce\u201d- all of which makes the work so clinical and impersonal. The reality is, that there is no more personal work than D&amp;I. You are literally elevating and enabling every human being\u2019s personal truth.<\/p>\n<p>When looking across Microsoft it\u2019s a clear fact that diversity is here. Take a moment to look around your office and you will see, hear or many times feel the many beautiful differences all around you. \u00a0The hard work is Inclusion &#8211; which is an action verb &#8211; not a one and done. I wish there was a 5 step plan to Inclusion, but the reality is that it is a long and winding road.<\/p>\n<p>This month I had the pleasure of experiencing true Inclusion at the NYC Diversity &amp; Inclusion Summit at our Times Square office, which brought together over 100 people who are committed to making the world a better place.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to identify exactly what the parts were that allowed for such a transformative experience, to capture the true magic in that room in words, but I\u2019ll try:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cm-edgetun.pages.dev\/en-us\/industry\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2019\/04\/MICROSOFT_DI_EventBlog_Photo1_760x400.png\" alt=\"panel of speakers on stools\" width=\"760\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s All In The Planning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So much hard work went into putting the speakers together. Bernie Milan, who led that effort, told \u00a0me that they \u201cthought it would be best to consider at least one panelist from each of the Employee Resource Groups (ERG) to get as much representation as we can.\u201d And they didn\u2019t stop with nominations from the groups but really drilled down to figure out what mattered to each individual regardless of what ERG community they identified with , including additional D&amp;I Stakeholders as part of the decision process. That work paid off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brave Enough To Share<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I feel like I can\u2019t do this part true justice: but there was so much bravery on display. It\u2019s not easy to share your story with a room full of 100 people you just met or don\u2019t even know. Yet that\u2019s what went down. People really shared some tough stories and that ended up building an awareness throughout the room of the experiences we share and those outside our individual histories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Open Hearts And Minds Light Our Way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen hearts and minds\u201d can come off all squishy. Yet anyone who has been there for a friend in crisis knows it isn\u2019t always easy to sit in another\u2019s truth. To empathize, learn and then champion.<\/p>\n<p>This is the path we need to take as we continue down this inclusion journey. I had the privilege of talking with folks from outside Microsoft about what they heard and saw, and found that we are having conversations that not many other places are having. \u201cIf we could even have this conversation at my company,\u201d people told me, \u201cthings would start changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The power was and is in the conversation- being curious, listening and really hearing each other is how we build empathy. There was true love and acceptance in the room\u2014 but don\u2019t think it was all warm \u00a0and fuzzy\u2014 much of the conversation was about the hard work that is ahead of us as a company, as an industry, as a country and as global citizens. We can\u2019t change the world without looking at our own behavior.
