As I wrote in a previous blog<\/a>, connectedness and intelligence are vital to optimizing urban mobility so cities and regions can become more sustainable, livable, and prosperous.<\/p>\n

Connectedness includes connecting citizens seamlessly with all their mobility options; connecting previously unrelated silos of data to gain new insights; and connecting government departments to each other and with private sector mobility providers.\u00a0 Intelligence means bringing new levels of rapid insight to the systems, devices, and decisions facing both the providers and users of transportation modes.<\/p>\n

Our forward-thinking Microsoft CityNext<\/a> partners and customers are tackling 21st<\/sup>-century transportation challenges by taking advantage of modern technology such as the cloud, sensors, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and more. Cities and regions can innovate with these technologies to enable smart, connected urban mobility solutions that help them reduce congestion and energy use, get commuters home faster and, ultimately, build stronger economies and greener cities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As we continue this blog series, we\u2019ll cover four key areas of urban mobility that are being digitally transformed: fleet and asset management, fare and toll management, traffic and transit optimization, and parking management. Today\u2019s focus is fleet and asset management<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Keep things moving with predictive maintenance and modernized asset management <\/strong><\/p>\n

Every city has a broad swath of transportation investments, from vehicles such as buses, trains, and maintenance trucks, to assets such as traffic lights, railroad crossing signs, and video cameras.<\/p>\n

Municipalities need to proactively manage and maintain vehicles and assets, not just for cost efficiency, but to keep people and goods moving so they get where they need to be on time. This is more important than ever as cities face unprecedented population growth and global competition for economic opportunities.<\/p>\n

Cities can take advantage of smart Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to bring connectedness and intelligence to fleet and asset management. For example, they can use sensors, data and machine learning for predictive maintenance. That way, city and transportation personnel can be alerted when a traffic light is approaching the end of its life, so it can be replaced before it burns out and causes traffic issues. Similarly, predictive maintenance can help them know when a rail car or city bus needs a preventive repair to avoid a breakdown and delays.<\/p>\n
