The day provides an excellent opportunity to discuss and normalize mental health issues so that we can make mental health a universal human right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental health is essential and is much more than the absence of illness. It is the key to our overall wellbeing. Close to <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2022\/06\/1120682#:~:text=Nearly%20one%20billion%20people%20worldwide%20suffer%20from%20some,that%20it%20includes%20around%20one%20in%20seven%20teenagers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Click to learn more about one billion of the world population\">one billion of the world population<\/a> are living with mental illness and the majority have no access to care. <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/mental-health#tab=tab_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Click to learn more about 10-20% of children and adolescents\">10-20% of children and adolescents<\/a> experience mental health conditions worldwide and <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/children\/mental-health#:~:text=How%20many%20children%20have%20mental,%2C%20behavioral%2C%20or%20developmental%20disorder.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Click to learn more about 1 in 5 U.S. children ages 3\u201317\">1 in 5 U.S. children ages 3\u201317<\/a> has a mental, emotional, behavioral, or developmental disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An increasing number of adolescents and young people are grappling with mental health conditions, which not only affect their physical health but also pose challenges to their academic success, interpersonal relationships, and overall wellbeing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents are coming into the counselor\u2019s office more because they are more comfortable talking about it,\u201d says Alison Gimbi, a school counselor for Middle Smitheld Elementary in Pennsylvania. \u201cWe don\u2019t just get the kids after something is already a problem. It\u2019s helped us do <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/leadership\/school-counselors-and-psychologists-remain-scarce-even-as-needs-rise\/2022\/03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Click to learn more about prevention, not just reaction work\">prevention, not just reaction work<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-educators-are-helping\">How educators are helping<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Educators help students to develop better emotional regulation, self-awareness, and empathy in the classroom. When emotions become uncomfortable and perspectives skewed, it may seem counterintuitive to focus on such feelings. But identifying and labeling these feelings is an <a title=\"\" aria-label=\"Click to learn more about the essential step in managing overwhelming emotions\" href=\"https:\/\/mhanational.org\/im-feeling-too-much-once-dealing-emotional-overload\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">essential step in managing overwhelming emotions<\/a>. Sometimes it\u2019s as simple as asking your students how they feel and providing the space to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-a89b3969 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zmeuVfTFiSU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch the YouTube video<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, educators support students by modeling and reminding students about positive coping skills and strategies. These strategies could be anything from deep breathing, practicing mindfulness, creating art, or physical movement. Even activism\u2014doing something good for your community\u2014can be empowering and&nbsp;<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/greatergood.berkeley.edu\/article\/item\/One_Way_to_Improve_Teen_Mental_Health_Activism?utm_source=Greater+Good+Science+Center&amp;utm_campaign=e891e07193-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_GG_Newsletter_September_26_2023&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_5ae73e326e-e891e07193-75046648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Click to learn more about improving mental health\">improve mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"technology-tools-for-perspective-and-balance\">Technology tools for perspective and balance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If there was any silver lining to be had with the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a renewed focus on mental wellness and self-care. Technology also became the lifeline that many utilized to seek help. In fact, a <a href=\"https:\/\/mhealthintelligence.com\/news\/telehealth-survey-sees-more-users-for-behavioral-health-than-physical-care#:~:text=January%2012%2C%202021%20%2D%20A%20new,services%20than%20for%20physical%20ailments.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"Click to learn more about the RAND study\">RAND study<\/a> found that the rise in telehealth use during the height of COVID-19 was driven more by people looking for mental health services than care for physical conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft believes that technology can play a valuable role in supporting the mental health of students and educators.
