To leverage the full potential of cloud technology, media companies will need to commit to a new business strategy. That\u2019s because migration changes existing business practices and relationships. Better still, you could even look to automate the process.<\/p>\n

4. Global distribution<\/h4>\n

A lot of\u00a0large OTT platforms are run in the cloud, serving\u00a0video to viewers using\u00a0content delivery networks\u00a0(CDNs).\u00a0If you\u2019re\u00a0dealing with multiple regions, demand\u00a0can be unpredictable. But\u00a0the cloud\u00a0allows you to scale delivery,\u00a0without over-provisioning,\u00a0to match\u00a0changing\u00a0demand.\u00a0You can also use it\u00a0to\u00a0deliver\u00a0live, broadcast-grade\u00a0content and channels\u00a0online\u00a0(as\u00a0several\u00a0providers\u00a0do for\u00a0major sports).<\/p>\n

Cloud-based channel playout and linear\u00a0channel origination\u00a0is\u00a0finally\u00a0on the rise.\u00a0Protocols like RIST, SRT, and\u00a0Zixi,\u00a0combined with\u00a0gradually improving connectivity and\u00a0bandwidth, have enabled\u00a0live streams\u00a0to be transported\u00a0into, around and out of the cloud.\u00a0A note of caution: connectivity\u00a0remains an area for\u00a0attention.<\/p>\n

Three practical tips for cloud migration<\/h2>\n

Each organisation will have its own migration journey, dictated by its individual business and customer needs. But the report highlights three key takeaways that will apply for all media companies.<\/p>\n

1. Engage your\u00a0whole organisation<\/h4>\n

First, get your CFO on-side. You\u2019ll need their support, because the cloud uses an OpEx rather than a CapEx model. Next, work with the business to rethink workflows \u2013 don\u2019t just migrate them to the cloud. Finally, to build support on your journey, regularly communicate the end to end strategy and provide training so your teams have the right skills to work alongside the latest technology.<\/p>\n

2. Go \u2018cloud native\u2019<\/h4>\n

In other words, create solutions that exploit the cloud\u2019s capabilities. That means taking advantage of its scalability, agility, resilience, performance and cost-effectiveness. Make sure your solutions are also built with security in mind. Consider factors like identity, access management, and encryption.<\/p>\n

3. Commit to the process<\/h4>\n

Define a strategy and plan, and get going. Break your migration journey into manageable steps by migrating individual business areas or workflows one at a time. Move whole workflows to avoid migrating content in and out of the cloud too often (which adds cost and time to the process).<\/p>\n

A practical way to learn about technology is to get hands-on with it \u2013 perhaps with a straightforward use case. The cost of experimenting is low, so why not try building a component that takes advantage of cloud capabilities, then tracking its performance and fine-tuning it? Or build a different component. Either way, it\u2019s time to seize the day.<\/p>\n
